Mavericks Play Day 2009

Over 50 young netballers from local schools and clubs and as far away as Ipswich travelled to the brilliant Great Baddow High School (you can see why they hold the league there...) and they met and were coached by Mavericks and Mavericks Youth players including a number of young England players!

In the morning the players were coached on gettting free and man to man marking in small groups. They got lots of attention from their SuperLeague and Talent League stars. Some players even had Mavericks coaches giving them top tips. A firm favourite seemed to be the shooting games (although running round the entire court seemed a little harsh) the players couldn't get enough!

At lunch time there was time for a small break and then a quiz seeing which players knew the England squad and what teams they played for... Check out the resources page for a copy. The Mavericks are made up of a range of players from different major clubs across the East Region and London. They shared their expertise in afternoon workshops where players could choose whether they worked on attacking, mid-court or defending skills with some of the best players in the country.The atmosphere was fantastic all day with only a few minor injuries from palyers working hard. There were a group of coaches and supporters watching the sessions to pick up tips.

After the specialist sessions the players were put into teams and organised themselves to play in a mini tournament in their age groups. The players put everything they had been working on throughout the day into practice... and showed some great game play! The Mavericks split up and took a team each. The action came thick an fast...

Throughout the entire day the Mavericks took notes on which players were putting in lots of effort and which were doing really well... so at the end of the day there was a small presentation! Everybody received a certificate that they could get signed by their favourite players and winners of awards were given t-shirts, balls, sweets and tickets to Mavericks matches as rewards for their performances... One player won an award for the best "Car Noise", yes car noise... but most of the awards were for netball.
